The Vestal Junior Team Tennis Association is a USTA-affiliated Community Tennis Association and was incorporated in 2006 in New York as a not-for-profit organization. This is the first initiative in southern New York to organize youth tennis teams.
Our emphasis is on learning the game of tennis by playing tennis and having fun. Junior team tennis uses a team format in which everyone plays. Two players from each team come on the court, play out a point, and then are replaced by two of their teammates for the next point. We use modified foam balls, a shortened court, and simplified scoring to make everything easy and enjoyable.
All of our coaches, team parents, members of the board of directors, and other participants are volunteers, most with children playing in the program. We charge a registration fee for each child and also solicit financial support from local sponsors to defray some of our program's equipment and team uniform expenses. The USTA provided us with a small grant to cover our start-up costs in 2006.
For our first season, we registered over 130 youths between the ages of 6 and 12 years and organized them by age group into 14 teams. After a few practices, regular match play began on June 24th. The kids played one match and had one practice a week through the summer. Matches and practices are held on Vestal's community tennis courts and at the High School. For the upcoming winter session, we will hold practices and matches indoors at the Southern Tier Sports Center on the Old Vestal Road in Vestal. We plan to expand the program in 2007 to include juniors 13-15 years of age.
Our association is managed by a Board of Directors. Info regarding scheduled meetings is posted on the website. All those participating in the program are welcome to attend our Board Meetings and to serve on the Board as vacancies become available.
