Tutorials and Tips to Improve Your Game

Below are several categories to help you become a better coach; to improve your own tennis game and become fitter and healthier, both mentally and physically; and to understand more fully the modern game of tennis.

  • VJTTA Primers  ( 10 items )

VJTTA Primers are written especially for our coaches.  These primers are the core instructional resources and material used in teaching our young players the game of tennis.  VJTTA Primers deal with the basics of tennis: grips, groundstrokes, volleys, serves, and drop feeds.

Coaches don't need to be accomplished players themselves to be good teachers; they only need to understand the strokes and mechanics being taught and the rationale for why we in VJTTA teach the way we do.  Young players having been taught the correct strokes and techniques are on their way to playing and enjoying tennis for the rest of their lives.

  • Strokes And Mechanics  ( 28 items )
VJTTA.com currently has more than two dozen instructional articles on tennis strokes and techniques. We have articles on the serve, groundstrokes, volleys, lobs, dropshots, and overheads. All these articles are geared to help you improve your game as a player and increase your understanding and skills as a teacher and coach. Each new issue of our e-Magazine will add more informative articles, so if you have already read all the ones here, please come back again soon for more. If you have any suggestions for future articles, please write us at contact@vjtta.com.
  • Tennis Videos  ( 17 items )

VJTTA acknowledges the kind permission of www.tennisplayer.netwww.tennisone.com, and www.tennismindgame.com to publish their original videos for registered users of VJTTA.com.  Please visit these great sites for additional information and resources about tennis.

  • Player Stroke Analysis  ( 4 items )
Presented here is our analysis of some of the best tennis strokes in the game today.  We have tried to identify the key features of these strokes that make them worthy of imitation.  We hope you can add some of these features to your game.  The analysis is keyed to the videos provided to us by TennisPlayer.net in the Tennis Videos category, also located in the Tutorials section.
  • Strategy  ( 8 items )
Your strokes and technique might look great in practice, but when you are playing a match you need more than good strokes if you hope to be victorious.  This section gives you some basic information on how to play your strokes correctly against different opponents and at different times in the match.  While there is general overall strategy, there is also strategy related to the specific strokes themselves.  Thus, there is a serving strategy, a groundstroke strategy, a return of serve strategy, and so forth.  We begin with some basic singles and doubles strategies.  We will add the specific stroke strategies to this section in later issues of the VJTTA e-Magazine.  In the meantime, if you have any specific strategies you would like to see addressed in future articles, please write us at contact@vjtta.com .
  • The Mental Side of Tennis  ( 2 items )
Tennis is more than just a physical game.  Indeed, some believe that the mental side of tennis is the most important component, and that between two equally talented combatants the one who is mentally stronger will be victorious.  Mentally stronger essentially means the player who can block from his mind all the distractions and extraneous thoughts that face him or her during the match, especially during the big points.  This section helps you understand the nature of these thoughts and how they can affect your game.  More importantly, it will give you some tools for confronting these mental demons and blocking them from your mind, so you can concentrate on the tennis task at hand.  This of course is a broad area of study, probably far beyond are ability to cover it thoroughly here.  Nevertheless, each future issue of VJTTA e-Magazine will contain at least one article on mental tennis to guide you in your match play.
  • Tennis Drills  ( 5 items )
There are innumerable tennis drills, and probably dozens of books on the subject.  We try in this section to list and describe the ones that we find beneficial and fun.  We particularly like drills that replicate game situations, whether singles or doubles.  For the most part, our drills try to develop an all court player (one who can hit groundstrokes, play mid-court balls, and come to the net).  Most of these drills can be easily modified to work effectively with players of all skill levels.
  • Fitness And Health  ( 1 items )
Physical conditioning is an important component of tennis. The player who lacks fitness will generally lose a match against an equally skilled player. This section provides some guidance for improving your physical fitness and staying healthy.
  • Miscellaneous Tennis Tutorials  ( 10 items )
This is a catch-all category containing all those articles that just didn't seem to fit into any of our other categories.   Hopefully, you won't find these articles any less interesting or informative.   The one on the Volleyboard, incidentally, was originally published in Tennis Pro Magazine.
